Famed Trojan warrior Antenor sailed to the island, which, after its former Greek dwelling place Ambrachia, named Brachia (Brač). He brought
Simon the winegrower with him, who according to tradition planted an olive sapling on Brač. Olive trees that found fertile soil in the stingy land of Brač and brought life to generations of islanders. And today it brings us joy and pleasure in the form of the original Brač product.
Scientific research conducted in recent years around the world confirms the already known fact that olive oil is the most important ingredient of the Mediterranean diet and has a beneficial effect on the condition of the organism. Thanks to its balanced composition, olive oil plays a protective role
against premature aging of blood vessels, protects the stomach and liver, promotes growth in childhood, and due to its nutritional and diet therapy properties it is recommended in the daily diet.
Olive oil prevents the onset of chronic inflammatory diseases because it also contains polyphenols, which the latest research suggests will take the title of the most used drugs in the next
decade.
For a decade now, olive oils from the highest Croatian island have won the most important recognitions. For the last few years, a trend became the rule. The most modern olive processing plants have been installed on Brač, and olive growers take care of olive groves like never before. That is the right moment for emergence of Brachia. Launched by the enthusiasm of the island's lovers and its descendants, Brachia has a simple mission. To present to Croatia and the world the oil that the people of Brač have already addressed with respect since ancient times. The oil is obtained from the autochthonous Oblica variety from selected island olive groves that defy the winter wind and the unbearable summer heat. An oil that connoisseurs will wonder where it has been so far, and which, due to its refinement, will seduce those who have never enjoyed olive oil before.
First written traces about olive growth were found in roman records written by travel writer named Strabon from first century BC, also significant is edict written by emperor Diocletian in third century AC in which olive growth is mentioned. The improvement and development of olive growing on the island of Brač in the 16th century was encouraged by the Venetian administration, which suggested to the Knez of Brač that olives be planted on untreated surfaces and a number of "wild" olives we planted, thus increasing the production of olive oil. The Venetian Senate has determined that anyone who damages or cuts down an olive tree is punished with a fine or expulsion. Such measures have helped olive growing become the most important agricultural branch, so at the end of the 18th century over 500 thousand olive trees were grown on Brač, which gave about 800 wagons of oil, more than the whole of Dalmatia at the time. According to the same author proclamation from Venice in 1754 the people of Brač are granted oil export by sea and outside the city of Venice unless this jeopardizes the supply of the city of Venice itself, which was then the largest importer of "Brač olive oil". At the time, the Brač Commune kept a record of olive revenues for the collection of taxes in order to prevent the smuggling of Brač oil, which was in demand on the market because of its reputation. Today, about one million olive trees grow on Brač, which is why the island of Brač is considered the largest olive growing area in Croatia. According to data from 2015, olives are grown on 1,883.22 hectares of agricultural land, which accounts for two thirds of all agricultural crops on Brač.
